According
to the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry, in 2005 a projected 6,335 women
in the state will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Forty of these women will
live in Granville County. Early detection is extremely important in determining
the chance of survival in breast cancer. In response to these issues Granville
Specialty Clinic (a division of Granville Medical Center) and the Granville
County Health Department are partnering with local churches and businesses to
form the Granville Breast Health Initiative. The Initiative will be funded by a
grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure NC Triangle Affiliate. The focus
for the Initiative will be three fold. First, education on breast health,
breast-self exam, regular screenings. Second, detection through regular
screening mammograms. And, the third focus will be on the rehabilitation
post-surgery with follow up care. The goal for the Granville Breast Health
Initiative is to decrease the breast cancer death rate in Granville County
through education, detection and treatment. For more information call Sally
Gilliland at the Granville Specialty Clinic 690-3210 or Vivian Paynter at the
Granville County Health Department at 693-2141.
