Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are medical doctors that specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, addictive and emotional disorders such as psychotic disorders (i.e. schizophrenia), mood disorders (i.e, depression), anxiety disorders (i.e., Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), substance-related disorders (i.e., drug abuse or alcoholism), sexual and gender identity disorders, and adjustment disorders (i.e., stress).  A psychiatrist understands the biologic, psychologic and social components of illness.
